The Chief Executive Officer of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) has been suspended for two weeks after the hospital announced a temporary halt to emergency admissions.
The suspension was directed by the Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, in a letter dated June 5, 2026.
According to the Minister, the decision takes immediate effect and follows concerns that the CEO’s announcement contradicted directives issued by President John Dramani Mahama.
The Minister instructed the KATH Board to enforce the suspension in accordance with Section 36(1) of the Ghana Health Service and Teaching Hospitals Act, 1996 (Act 526).
The action comes after KATH announced on June 3, 2026, that it would temporarily suspend emergency admissions due to operational challenges affecting healthcare delivery.
Mr Akandoh said a review involving the Ministry’s Chief Director, Technical Adviser and Legal Adviser concluded that the announcement was inconsistent with presidential directives.
In addition to the suspension, the Minister has ordered the KATH Board to investigate the circumstances surrounding the decision to suspend emergency admissions and a media interview granted by the hospital’s Head of Public Affairs to Channel One News.
The Ministry believes the comments made by the Public Affairs Unit may also have breached directives from the Presidency and has asked the Board to determine whether management authorised the interview.
The Board has been directed to establish responsibility for the announcement and media engagement, and to apply appropriate sanctions if any misconduct is found.
A report on the investigations is expected within two weeks.
The development follows widespread public concern over the temporary suspension of emergency admissions at KATH, one of Ghana’s largest referral hospitals serving patients across the middle and northern sectors of the country.
