The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has handed over the cleared right of way for the construction of the Accra-Kumasi Expressway to the government, marking the completion of a key preparatory phase of the project.
The handover took place on Monday, September 14, 2026, after the GAF completed the clearance of 175.6 kilometres of the project corridor.
The exercise, which was undertaken by the 48 Engineers Regiment of the Ghana Armed Forces, was completed in 19 weeks, one week ahead of the scheduled 20-week timeframe.
President John Dramani Mahama, who received the cleared corridor on behalf of the government, commended the Armed Forces for completing what he described as a critical assignment for the project.
“In 20 weeks, I’m pleased to announce to the whole country of Ghana that our armed forces have accomplished this mission. One week ahead of schedule, they did it in 19 weeks,” President Mahama said.
He said the cleared route stretches from Ablekuma in the Greater Accra Region to Sewua in the Ashanti Region and involved clearing through forests and crossing rivers and streams.
“From Ablekuma in Greater Accra to Sewua in the Ashanti Region, within 19 weeks, 175.6 kilometres of road passing through virgin forests, crossing rivers and streams, our Ghana Armed Forces can today announce to all of us, as they say in military jargon, mission accomplished,” he said.
President Mahama said the work was an important preparatory step towards the construction of the 198.7-kilometre Accra-Kumasi Expressway.
The planned highway is expected to be a six-lane road connecting Accra and Kumasi and will follow a different alignment from the existing Accra-Kumasi highway.
The President also announced that an initial $2 billion in funds is available for the commencement of the project. For this, he added that contractors who get to work on the expressway will not have to worry about funds.
The handover of the cleared right of way now paves the way for the next stages of work on the proposed Expressway, which the government has identified as a major transport corridor between Ghana’s two largest cities.
