7 police officers promoted for foiling Tema MoMo robbery

Seven police officers have been promoted following their swift and courageous response to a mobile money (MoMo) robbery incident in Tema, an intervention that authorities say demonstrated exceptional professionalism, discipline and dedication to duty.

The Ghana Police Service announced the promotions in recognition of the officers’ gallantry in safeguarding lives and property during the incident. The Service commended their actions as exemplary and consistent with the highest standards of policing.

The officers promoted are Chief Inspector Enoch Nartey Nuer, Inspector Gershon Dekpey, Inspector Prince Asante, Sergeant Lukman Mohammed, Sergeant Eugene Kuudouru, Corporal Jerome Akator, and Lance Corporal Jonathan Sewurah.

The promotions were conferred on April 14, 2026, by the Inspector-General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, together with members of the Police Management Board, who praised the officers for their courage, discipline and professionalism.

Yohuno urged the officers to view their elevation as a call to greater responsibility, emphasising the need to uphold high ethical and professional standards in the discharge of their duties.

He further encouraged personnel across the Service to remain committed to protecting lives and property, noting that exemplary performance would continue to be duly recognised.

The incident occurred at Community 5, around 8:30 a.m. at Aba Fosuah Plaza, where a female mobile money vendor sustained a gunshot wound to the leg while resisting an armed attack.

According to reports, the officers responded promptly to distress calls and intervened at a critical moment to prevent further harm and secure the area.

A police statement signed by ASP Dede Dzakpasu, Head of Public Affairs for the Tema Regional Police Command, indicated that two armed robbery suspects arrived on a motorbike and posed as customers, requesting a “cash-out” transaction.

As the vendor attempted to process the request, one suspect drew a pistol and demanded her bag containing cash. A struggle ensued, during which the pillion rider shot the victim in the leg. The suspects then fled the scene with the money.

A nearby patrol team from the Regional Operations Unit, already strategically deployed in the area, quickly intercepted the suspects around Tema General Hospital.

Despite being ordered to stop, the suspects attempted to escape toward the Smart Hotel area while firing at officers.

The police returned fire, neutralising both suspects. They were later transported to the Police Hospital, where they were pronounced dead on arrival.
