The government has allocated more than GH¢500 million over two budget cycles to establish the long-anticipated Women’s Bank Project, with officials confirming that key preparatory work has already been completed ahead of its rollout.
The initiative received an initial allocation of GH¢51.3 million in 2025, followed by a significantly larger provision of GH¢450 million in the 2026 Budget, bringing the total budgetary commitment to over half a billion cedis.
Briefing Parliament on the status of the project, Deputy Minister for Finance Thomas Nyarko Ampem disclosed that government has formally applied to the Bank of Ghana (BoG) for the necessary operating licence to commence full operations.
Responding to a question from the Member of Parliament for Techiman South, Martin Kweku Adjei-Mensah Korsah, on when the Women’s Bank Project would be rolled out, the Deputy Minister assured the House that implementation is advancing steadily.
He explained that all preparatory processes had been completed, including the incorporation of WDB GH Ltd on January 26, 2026, marking a key institutional milestone in the establishment of the bank.
According to him, significant progress has been made towards operationalising the project, which is expected to play a major role in expanding financial inclusion and improving access to credit for women entrepreneurs across the country.
Mr Nyarko Ampem, who is also the Member of Parliament for Asuogyaman, assured Parliament that a comprehensive update on the status of the initiative will be presented by the Finance Minister during the Mid-Year Fiscal Policy Review scheduled for July.
The Women’s Bank Project forms part of government’s broader financial sector development agenda aimed at deepening access to banking services, particularly for underserved groups, with a strong focus on women-led businesses and economic empowerment.
