Police arrest 3 Chinese nationals, 3 others over killing at mining site

The Western Regional Police Command has arrested six persons, including three Chinese nationals, in connection with the fatal shooting of a man at an illegal mining site at Gwira Ampanise in the Nzema East District of the Western Region.

The deceased, identified as 45-year-old Angu Mensah, the Abusuapanyin of Gwira Ampanise, reportedly died after being shot in the chest during a dispute at the mining site on Sunday, May 24, 2026.

The suspects in police custody are Hamza Abubakar, 36; Hamidu Seidu, 42; Francis Biewose, 26; Bai Yaozheng, 36; Liu Gang, 43; and Wen Xien Wen, 45.

According to a statement issued by the Western Regional Police Command and signed by Superintendent Olivia Etu Adiku, Head of the Public Affairs Unit, police in Axim received a distress call at about 1:20 p.m. reporting a shooting incident at the site.

A team of officers, together with personnel from the Regional Police Intelligence Directorate, proceeded to the scene to commence investigations.

Preliminary police investigations established that a misunderstanding broke out at about 11:45 a.m. between the deceased and some persons at the mining site.

During the altercation, one Alfred Sadick, also known as Strongman, allegedly pulled out a firearm and shot Mensah in the chest.

The suspect, who is believed to be the prime shooter, is currently on the run, and police say efforts are underway to arrest him.

The body of the deceased has been deposited at the Axim Government Hospital mortuary for preservation and autopsy.

The Police Command has appealed to members of the public to volunteer credible information that could lead to the arrest of the suspect.

Police investigations into the incident are ongoing.
