New Patriotic Party (NPP) First Vice-Chairman aspirant George Kwabena Abankwah-Yeboah has stated that the party must first rebuild trust among its supporters and resolve its internal challenges before it can effectively challenge the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the 2028 elections.
According to him, the NPP’s 2024 electoral defeat exposed deep dissatisfaction among sections of the party’s support base, which must be addressed through a comprehensive reorganisation.
Mr Abankwah-Yeboah said that about two million NPP supporters who failed to vote in the 2024 election did so largely because of internal party concerns rather than economic conditions.
“The 2 million of our people who did not show up to vote were not based on the economy,” he said on Eyewitness News on Thursday, September 3, 2026.
He explained that many supporters were unhappy with some decisions taken by the party and had consequently lost confidence in its leadership.
Mr Abankwah-Yeboah, a former NPP National Treasurer, said the party’s ongoing reorganisation must therefore focus on restoring confidence and bringing disaffected members back into the fold.
“We have continued to do so by reorganising the party and getting leadership in place, because all is based on trust,” he said.
He maintained that the NPP could resolve its internal difficulties if its new leadership was prepared to listen to members, involve them in decision-making and provide credible leadership, saying “Yes, we can fix ourselves.”
Mr Abankwah-Yeboah also identified concerns over the party’s relationship with the business community as another issue requiring attention.
