Liverpool tops English football rich list for the first time

Liverpool Football Club has claimed the title of England’s richest club for the first time, surpassing Manchester United and Manchester City, according to Deloitte’s annual Football Money League.

The Merseyside side generated £729 million in revenue during their Premier League-winning 2024/25 season, putting them at the top of England’s financial rankings and fifth globally. Six Premier League clubs made the top 10 worldwide.

Liverpool’s financial surge was driven by a combination of factors, including high commercial earnings, strong matchday revenue, and participation in the UEFA Champions League. Additional income from non-football events at Anfield, such as major concerts, also contributed, reflecting a diversified business strategy beyond the pitch.

Manchester United, a mainstay among football’s wealthiest clubs for nearly three decades, slipped to eighth this year following a challenging period under former manager Ruben Amorim. The club trails the global leader, Real Madrid, by over £300 million.

Real Madrid retained the top spot globally, generating nearly £1.013 billion in revenue despite failing to secure a major trophy. The ongoing refurbishment of Santiago Bernabeu into a multi-purpose stadium has continued to yield significant financial returns for the Spanish giants.

Liverpool’s ascent marks a milestone in English football, highlighting the club’s commercial growth and strategic management as it combines on-field success with off-field revenue diversification.
