Ghana’s BRICS bid gets Russian Backing at Russia-Africa Summit

Russia has pledged support for Ghana’s application to join the BRICS bloc as a partner country, with Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov promising to rally the group’s founding members to build consensus in favour of the West African nation.

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, disclosed this in a Facebook post on Wednesday, October 28, following a breakfast meeting with Mr Lavrov and other African foreign ministers at the ongoing Russia-Africa Summit.

According to Ablakwa, the Russian Foreign Minister assured Ghana of Moscow’s support and committed to engaging the other founding members of BRICS to secure their backing for the application.

Ghana announced its intention to join BRICS on October 6, 2026, after Cabinet approved the move. Ablakwa disclosed the decision during a joint press briefing with India’s External Affairs Minister, Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, in Accra.

Ghana is seeking partner-country status as part of efforts to diversify its  economic and diplomatic partnerships.

The development could strengthen Ghana’s efforts to broaden its international partnerships and explore additional avenues for economic cooperation as the country seeks to diversify its development options.

Ablakwa said the Mahama administration remained committed to Ghana’s longstanding foreign policy of non-alignment, guided by the principle of being “friends of all, enemies to none”.

He said the government would continue to pursue partnerships in the country’s national interest while maintaining its established diplomatic approach.

BRICS is an intergovernmental grouping of major emerging economies that seeks to strengthen economic cooperation and coordination among its members. Its partner-country framework provides an avenue for closer engagement with countries that are not full members.
