At least 13 people are feared dead following a devastating three-vehicle collision at Odumase near Konongo on the Kumasi-Accra Highway in the Ashanti Region.
The crash involved a cargo truck loaded with tomatoes, a passenger bus and an empty fuel tanker.
Several passengers are reported to have been injured, while others were trapped in the wreckage following the collision.
Preliminary accounts suggest that the crash may have occurred during a dangerous overtaking manoeuvre, resulting in a head-on collision between the vehicles. However, authorities have yet to establish the exact cause of the accident.
The impact severely damaged all three vehicles and triggered an urgent response from emergency teams, who rushed to the scene to rescue victims.
Some injured occupants were reportedly pulled from the wreckage and transported to nearby health facilities for medical attention.
Rescue and recovery operations continued for several hours as emergency personnel worked to account for victims and clear the damaged vehicles from the highway.
The accident also caused significant traffic disruption along the Kumasi-Accra Highway, with long queues forming as security agencies and emergency responders managed the scene.
The tragedy has renewed concerns about road safety on Ghana’s major highways, where speeding, reckless overtaking, poor vehicle maintenance and driver negligence are frequently cited as major causes of fatal crashes.
Authorities are expected to launch investigations to determine the circumstances that led to the accident.
