Ghana progress to World Cup round of 32 despite 2-1 defeat to Croatia

Ghana’s Black Stars have booked their place in the Round of 32 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup despite suffering a 2-1 defeat to Croatia in their final Group L fixture in Philadelphia on Saturday.

Although the loss ended Ghana’s unbeaten run in the group stage, the Black Stars had already done enough in their previous matches to secure qualification for the knockout rounds under FIFA’s expanded tournament format.

Victories over Panama and a hard-fought draw against England provided Ghana with the points needed to advance, leaving Saturday’s encounter with Croatia important mainly for final group standings. Croatia, on the other hand, entered the match needing a positive result to keep their qualification hopes alive and approached the contest with greater urgency.

The Europeans dominated possession from the opening whistle and controlled the midfield, forcing Ghana onto the back foot for much of the first half. Their early pressure paid off when Petar Sučić broke the deadlock after being set up by Mateo Kovačić, giving Croatia a deserved 1-0 lead before halftime.

Ghana struggled to create meaningful chances in the opening 45 minutes as Croatia’s disciplined defensive setup frustrated the Black Stars’ attack.

The second half, however, saw a transformed Ghanaian side. Carlos Queiroz’s men emerged with greater intensity, pressing higher up the pitch and committing more players forward in search of an equaliser.

Their persistence was rewarded in the 73rd minute when Derrick Luckassen levelled the scores, meeting Ernest Nuamah’s well-delivered cross to make it 1-1.

The equaliser sparked renewed belief among the Black Stars, who enjoyed their best spell of the match and looked capable of completing the comeback. Croatia briefly appeared rattled as Ghana pushed forward in search of a second goal.

However, the momentum shifted once again in the closing stages. Croatia capitalised on the spaces left behind by Ghana’s attacking approach, and in the 83rd minute captain Luka Modrić produced a pinpoint assist for Nikola Vlašić, who calmly restored his side’s lead.

Despite a late push from Ghana, Croatia defended resolutely to preserve their advantage and claim a crucial victory that kept their hopes of progressing alive.

While the result was disappointing for the Black Stars, it did little to alter their World Cup ambitions. Ghana’s earlier performances in the group proved enough to secure qualification for the Round of 32, underlining the importance of their victory over Panama and valuable draw against England.

The Black Stars will now turn their attention to the knockout stage, where every match becomes a must-win encounter. Head coach Carlos Queiroz and his players will be aiming to tighten up defensively and improve their finishing as they prepare for an even tougher challenge.

Ghana’s Round of 32 opponents will be confirmed once the remaining group-stage fixtures are completed.

Despite the setback against Croatia, the Black Stars remain firmly in the hunt for World Cup glory, with their journey continuing into the knockout phase.
