Former Microfinance and Small Loans Centre (MASLOC) Chief Executive Officer, Sedina Tamakloe Attionu, has been returned to Ghana from the United States to begin serving a 10-year prison sentence handed down by the Accra High Court.
Attionu arrived at the Kotoka International Airport on Tuesday morning aboard United Airlines flight UA 996, which landed at approximately 9:01 a.m. after departing from Washington Dulles International Airport.
Sources familiar with the process said security officials took her into custody immediately upon arrival. She is currently undergoing routine medical assessments and debriefing procedures before being transferred to a designated correctional facility.
Her return follows efforts by Ghanaian authorities to secure her extradition after she remained in the United States and failed to return to Ghana following a medical trip, despite ongoing criminal proceedings against her.
The former MASLOC boss was convicted in absentia after she did not return from the United States, where she had travelled for medical treatment in 2021. On April 16, 2024, the High Court sentenced her to 10 years’ imprisonment with hard labour.
Attionu and her co-accused, Daniel Axim, were convicted on 78 counts, including conspiracy, stealing, causing financial loss to the state, money laundering, and causing loss to public property.
The prosecution maintained that their actions resulted in substantial financial losses to the state through unauthorised transactions, procurement breaches, and other irregularities during their time at MASLOC.
