Former Vice-President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has emerged winner of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential primary held on Saturday, January 31, 2026, securing the party’s flagbearership for the 2028 general elections for a second consecutive time.

Dr Bawumia garnered 110,645 votes, representing 56.48 per cent of the total valid votes cast, according to results collated from polling centres across the country.

His victory became evident as counting progressed nationwide, with the former Vice-President maintaining a comfortable lead over his challengers throughout the process.

More than 211,000 delegates participated in the election, voting at over 300 polling centres nationwide in what party officials described as a highly competitive contest.

Dr Bawumia contested the primary against four other aspirants: former Minister for Food and Agriculture Dr Bryan Acheampong; former Education Minister Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum; former NPP General Secretary Kwabena Agyei Agyepong; and businessman and former Assin Central MP Kennedy Ohene Agyapong.

The primaries were held across all 16 regions of Ghana, as delegates selected the candidate to lead the NPP’s effort to reclaim power in the 2028 general elections.
