Eleven people have been killed and 13 others injured in a multiple-vehicle crash on the Ofankor-Pokuase stretch of the Accra-Nsawam Highway.
The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) confirmed that the fatal crash occurred at about 4:00 a.m. on Thursday, August 13, 2026, between the Ofankor Barrier and the John Teye enclave.
The accident involved 24 people and seven vehicles, including two tipper trucks, two Sprinter buses, two saloon cars and a tricycle.
According to the GNFS, 11 victims died in the crash, while the 13 injured persons were rescued and conveyed to the Achimota Hospital for medical attention.
Rescue teams from the Amasaman Fire Station and the GNFS headquarters were dispatched to the scene after the incident was reported to assist with rescue and recovery operations.
The GNFS Divisional Officer One (DO1), Emmanuel Bonnie, said investigations had commenced to establish the circumstances surrounding the crash.
The cause of the accident had not been established as of the time of filing the report.
The crash caused significant disruption to traffic along the Ofankor-Pokuase stretch, with motorists experiencing delays as emergency and rescue teams worked at the scene.
Authorities are expected to provide further information as investigations continue into the circumstances that led to the deadly collision.
The incident adds to concerns over road safety and the need for greater vigilance among motorists, particularly along busy highways where heavy-duty vehicles, commercial buses and other road users operate alongside one another.
