The Electoral Commission (EC) has announced that a parliamentary by-election will be held in the Ayawaso East Constituency on Tuesday, March 3, 2026.
In a statement on Friday, January 16, 2026, the EC explained that the seat became vacant following the death of the legislator, triggering the constitutional requirement under Article 112(5) to hold a by-election.
Nominations are now open for all eligible candidates. The Commission noted that nomination forms can be downloaded from its website between January 16 and February 11, 2026.
Completed forms will be accepted at the Ayawaso East Municipal Office at North Ridge from Monday, February 9 to Wednesday, February 11, between 9:00 am and 12:00 pm, and 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm each day. Candidates may submit forms in person or via their proposer or seconder.
Each nomination must be endorsed by two registered voters as proposer and seconder, and supported by 18 additional registered voters. All forms must be submitted in quadruplicate.
The filing fee is GHC 10,000 per candidate, with a reduced fee of GHC 7,500 for female aspirants and persons with disabilities.
The Commission urged all candidates and political parties to adhere strictly to the guidelines to ensure a transparent and orderly process.
The by-election follows the death of Mahama Naser Toure, a four-term legislator who served on several parliamentary committees, including Energy; Roads and Transport; House Committee; and Private Members’ Bills and Motions Committee. He passed away on January 4, 2026, at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital after a period of illness.
