The Ghana Police Service, in collaboration with the Military and intelligence agencies, has recovered five bodies following a series of violent attacks in the Nkwanta South Municipality of the Oti Region on the night of March 25, 2026.
A joint taskforce, comprising personnel from the Police Service, Military, Bureau of National Investigations (BNI), Defence Intelligence, and the Ghana National Fire Service, retrieved the remains of three males and two females from two separate locations in the municipality.
The bodies have been transported to the regional morgue for preservation, forensic examination, and identification.
The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mr. Christian Tetteh Yuhuno, has directed the deployment of two armoured vehicles and additional officers from the National Police Operations to restore calm and prevent further disturbances in the area. Tactical support units are now patrolling high-risk zones and securing key installations within Nkwanta township.
In a statement, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) John Nchor, Public Relations Officer for the Oti Region, said the situation is under control, and normal activities are gradually resuming.
He confirmed that investigations are underway under the supervision of the Regional Police Command to determine the circumstances of the attacks and bring those responsible to justice.
Security agencies are conducting door-to-door enquiries, reviewing available CCTV footage, and analysing forensic evidence collected from the scenes to reconstruct the events and uncover potential motives.
DSP Nchor appealed to residents of Nkwanta and surrounding communities to remain calm and cooperate fully with the authorities.
He urged members of the public to provide credible information that could assist the investigations while cautioning against the spread of rumours that could escalate tensions.
