NIA sets new charges for Ghana Card registration and related services

The National Identification Authority (NIA) has announced revised fees and charges for Ghana Card registration and related services, effective Monday, February 2, 2026, following parliamentary approval.

In a statement issued on January 26, 2026, the Authority said the new charges align with the Fees and Charges (Miscellaneous Provisions) (Amendment) Regulations, 2025 (L.I. 2512), passed by Parliament in November 2025 under the Fees and Charges (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act, 2022 (Act 1080).

The NIA explained that the adjustment follows a review of operational costs. The previous fee structure, approved in 2023, was based on 2022 cost assumptions. Since then, rising expenses for technology licensing, cybersecurity, utilities, logistics, and personnel had been absorbed without corresponding fee increases.

“The Ghana Card has evolved into critical national infrastructure, and its long-term sustainability requires periodic, modest fee realignment,” the Authority said.

Revised Fees at District Offices

  • First-time registration remains free for persons below 25 years.

  • Individuals aged 25 and above will pay GH¢30.

  • Card replacement and nationality updates: GH¢200.

  • Card renewal: GH¢150.

  • Record updates without card replacement remain free.

Premium Centre Charges

  • First-time registration, card renewal, nationality updates, and record updates with replacement: GH¢410 each.

  • Card replacement alone: GH¢520.

  • Record updates without replacement: GH¢165.

Fees for Foreign Nationals

  • First-time registration and nationality updates: USD 120 (cedi equivalent).

  • Annual card renewal and replacement: USD 78.

  • Multi-year renewals: USD 75 per year.

  • Record updates without replacement remain free.

The NIA assured the public that the revised fees will be applied transparently and responsibly, aimed at strengthening the national identity system to support governance, service delivery, financial inclusion, and national development.
