Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has commenced legal action against GoldBod Chief Executive Officer Sammy Gyamfi over comments he said are false and defamatory.
The Effutu Member of Parliament disclosed the lawsuit on Monday, August 24, 2026, as Parliament resumed sitting amid an ongoing public disagreement over GoldBod’s operations and the reported US$1.7 billion loss suffered by the Bank of Ghana (BoG) in 2025 under the Domestic Gold Purchase Programme (DGPP).
The confrontation between the two intensified after Gyamfi labelled Mr Afenyo-Markin an “extortionist”. The GoldBod CEO made the comment in response to the Minority Leader’s calls for greater transparency and accountability regarding the gold purchase programme.
Afenyo-Markin said the legal action extends beyond Gyamfi to media organisations that carried the statements he considers defamatory.
“I have accordingly caused writs to be filed in Suit Number GT/1029/2026, titled Osahen Alexander Afenyo-Markin versus Samuel Adu Gyamfi and Multimedia Group Limited at the Accra High Court, and Suit Number GR/ACH/CC/C5/02/2026, titled Osahen Alexander Afenyo-Markin versus Eric Adjei and Peace FM at the Achimota Circuit Court,” he said.
The Minority Leader said he was confident that the courts would resolve the dispute after considering the evidence and relevant laws.
“I have every confidence that in the fullness of time the court will make the appropriate determination,” he added.
The court action follows a series of exchanges between the two officials concerning the financial performance of the DGPP and responsibility for the reported losses.
Afenyo-Markin has consistently called on the government and GoldBod to provide answers over the reported losses. Gyamfi, however, has denied claims that GoldBod was responsible for the losses attributed to the programme.
Gyamfi has further indicated that he is prepared to defend in court the allegations he made against the Minority Leader.
