The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has demanded the immediate reinstatement of the Chief Executive Officer of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), Dr. Paa Kwesi Baidoo, describing a directive for his suspension as unjustified and lacking any professional basis.
The call follows an emergency meeting of the National Executive Council (NEC) of the Association held on Saturday, June 6, 2026, to deliberate on a directive issued by the Minister of Health, Mr. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, on June 5, instructing the Board of KATH to suspend the hospital’s Chief Executive Officer.
In a statement jointly signed by the President of the GMA, Prof. Dr. (Med) Ernest Yorke, and the General Secretary, Dr. (Dent) Richard Selormey, the Association strongly defended the actions taken by the management of the hospital during the recent congestion crisis at the facility’s Accident and Emergency Centre.
According to the Association, decisions taken by management during the period were consistent with globally accepted standards of healthcare administration and patient safety and were aimed at protecting patients and ensuring continuity of care.
“The actions taken by the management of Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital were the right and proper professional and administrative decisions in line with best practice in patient safety and responsible healthcare leadership across the world,” the statement said.
The GMA rejected suggestions that the hospital had abandoned patients or failed to comply with directives issued by President John Dramani Mahama regarding healthcare delivery.
Rather, the Association argued that the temporary redirection of patients to other healthcare facilities was a carefully coordinated intervention intended to guarantee safe and timely medical treatment at a time when pressure on the emergency centre had become unsustainable.
“The actions taken did not turn away patients to their fate or flout the President’s directive but rather redirected patients and ensured they received safe and timely care at nearby hospitals with support from specialists from KATH,” the statement noted.
The Association explained that the intervention was undertaken in collaboration with the Ashanti Regional Health Directorate, the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council, healthcare facilities across the region and frontline healthcare professionals.
According to the GMA, the coordinated effort helped ease congestion at the Accident and Emergency Centre while ensuring that patients continued to receive the medical attention they required.
The Association maintained that the decision taken by KATH management demonstrated responsible leadership under difficult circumstances and should not be grounds for disciplinary action.
Consequently, the GMA called for the immediate reversal of the suspension directive and demanded that Dr. Baidoo be reinstated within three days.
The latest development adds a new dimension to the ongoing debate surrounding the management of the country’s second-largest teaching hospital and is expected to generate further discussions among healthcare professionals, policymakers and the public.
The Ministry of Health is yet to publicly respond to the GMA’s demand for the reinstatement of the KATH Chief Executive Officer.
