A dramatic scene played out at the Accra High Court on Wednesday, September 23, when officers from the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) attempted to arrest Manhyia South MP Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah — an operation the agency says traces back to two ignored invitations issued in February 2026.
In a statement explaining the incident, EOCO said its officers were acting within the lawful discharge of their duties when they moved to arrest the MP in connection with an ongoing investigation.
The Office noted that Baffour Awuah had been invited twice in February 2026 to assist with the probe, stating: “The Office had previously invited Hon. Baffour Awuah to assist with the investigation on two occasions in February 2026. The invitations were not honoured.”
Having exhausted that route, EOCO said it resorted to lawful steps to secure his attendance — one of which was the attempted arrest at the High Court. The operation was not completed, however, as officers stepped back after the situation escalated, judging that pushing further could endanger public safety.
EOCO further disclosed that it has identified two persons suspected of intervening to help the MP leave the scene, and is now assessing their conduct to determine whether further action should be taken.
The agency confirmed that Baffour Awuah subsequently proceeded to Parliament, and said it recognises and respects the constitutional privileges and immunities granted to Members of Parliament.
Even so, EOCO maintained that parliamentary membership does not, on its own, bring an investigation to a close or place anyone beyond the reach of the law.
The Office says the investigation remains active, and it will review the full circumstances of the incident — including available video evidence — before deciding on its next steps.
