Former General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), John Boadu, has formally entered the race for the party’s National Chairmanship, pledging to help rebuild the party and position it for a stronger comeback ahead of the 2028 general elections
Mr Boadu submitted his nomination at the NPP’s national headquarters at Asylum Down in Accra on Thursday, August 27, ahead of the party’s national executive elections scheduled for October 3.
His filing was accompanied by a show of support from several party figures, including the Member of Parliament for Fanteakwa, the MP for Trobu, the NPP Volta Regional Chairman and a number of former MPs.
The development formally places Mr Boadu among the growing number of candidates seeking to occupy one of the NPP’s most influential national executive positions.
Boadu challenges Govt’s 24-Hour Economy
Speaking after submitting his nomination, Mr Boadu turned his attention to the performance of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government, accusing it of failing to deliver on some of its major campaign promises.
He singled out the government’s flagship 24-hour economy policy, questioning the extent to which the initiative had translated into tangible results for Ghanaians.
According to him, the government had made significant promises to the electorate but was yet to demonstrate meaningful progress in implementing the 24-hour economy in a manner that would meet the expectations created during the election campaign.
His comments formed part of his broader argument that the NPP must provide strong and credible leadership capable of effectively scrutinising the government while presenting a convincing alternative to voters.
Calls for stronger NPP leadership
Mr Boadu said the NPP required leadership with the experience, credibility and capacity to reconnect the party with the electorate following its defeat and help restore confidence in its political fortunes.
He argued that rebuilding the party would require a leadership structure capable of responding to the concerns of ordinary Ghanaians while strengthening the party internally.
The former General Secretary’s bid comes at a critical period for the NPP as the party prepares to elect a new crop of national executives who will be expected to steer its affairs towards the 2028 elections.
The National Chairmanship is particularly significant because of its central role in coordinating the party’s political and organisational activities, mobilising the grassroots and helping to shape the party’s electoral strategy.
Mr Boadu is therefore positioning his candidacy within a broader call for renewal, stronger organisation and a more effective engagement with voters.
National Executive Elections Set For October 3
The NPP’s national executive elections, scheduled for October 3, are expected to determine the leadership team that will oversee the party during a crucial phase of its preparations for the next general election.
Mr Boadu’s formal filing adds to the competition for the National Chairmanship, a position that has attracted considerable interest among senior party figures.
Having previously served as the party’s General Secretary, Mr Boadu brings extensive experience of the NPP’s national organisational structure and political operations to the contest.
His campaign is expected to focus on rebuilding the party’s grassroots structures, reconnecting with voters and strengthening the NPP’s capacity to mount an effective challenge in 2028.
For Mr Boadu, the chairmanship contest is therefore not only about occupying a national executive position but also about shaping the direction of the party as it seeks to recover political ground and return to government.
The filing on August 27 marks the formal beginning of his campaign for the position and gives party delegates a clearer choice as the October 3 elections approach.
