The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has thrown its full support behind Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin and the Minority Caucus in their demand for a comprehensive parliamentary inquiry into the reported GH¢22 billion losses associated with the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod).
The party said it would stand behind the Minority for as long as necessary to ensure that all questions surrounding the reported losses are answered publicly and transparently.
The NPP’s position, announced by its National Organiser, Henry Nana Boakye, at a press briefing in Accra on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, comes amid an escalating exchange of accusations between the Minority and GoldBod Chief Executive Officer, Sammy Gyamfi, over the reported financial exposure and responsibility for it.
Mr Nana Boakye said there was no division within the NPP over the matter, stressing that the party fully endorsed the Minority’s efforts to scrutinise GoldBod’s transactions and demand accountability.
“We are fully behind the Minority. On behalf of the entire New Patriotic Party, there is no confusion anywhere. We are fully behind the mighty Minority,” he said.
He said the party’s support extended to every member of the Minority Caucus under the leadership of Mr Afenyo-Markin.
“The New Patriotic Party stands fully, completely, and unreservedly behind our mighty Minority Caucus in Parliament, led by Alexander Afenyo-Markin,” he stated.
‘This is a national duty’
Mr Nana Boakye said the NPP supported not only the Minority’s questions but also its demand for a detailed account of how the reported losses occurred at a state institution responsible for the purchase and management of Ghana’s gold.
“We wholeheartedly support each member of our Minority Caucus in this struggle,” he said.
“We back their questions, we back their scrutiny, we back their demand for a full, transparent account of how a state institution charged with buying and protecting Ghana’s gold ended up presiding over such huge losses of this magnitude.”
He rejected attempts to characterise the issue as merely another confrontation between the governing party and the opposition, insisting that accountability for public resources transcended partisan politics.
“This is not partisan politics. This is a national duty,” he said.
According to him, every government has an obligation to account to citizens for public resources placed under its control.
“Whoever governs this country is answerable to the people who elected them. They are answerable to every dollar of the people’s money that passes through their hands,” he said.
NPP vows not to back down
The NPP National Organiser said the party would maintain its support for the Minority until the controversy was fully resolved.
“We are not backing off, not now, not tomorrow, not until every question is answered in full and in public and under proper scrutiny,” he declared.
He urged the Minority leadership to exploit every parliamentary avenue available to investigate the matter and obtain the necessary documentation.
“We also say this to the Minority Leader and every member of the caucus. Use every relevant law in the books, every question on the floor of Parliament, every committee hearing, every request for documents, every order paper, every point of order,” he said.
He further encouraged the caucus to make full use of Parliament’s Standing Orders to compel the necessary scrutiny of the transactions.
“Utilise every relevant tool provided by the Standing Orders in our Parliament with confidence,” he added.
Parliament belongs to Ghanaians
Mr Nana Boakye said Parliament had a constitutional responsibility to protect the interests of Ghanaians and ensure that public institutions were subjected to appropriate oversight.
“The Parliament belongs to the people of Ghana, not to the convenience of whoever is in the office,” he said.
He therefore urged the Minority not to restrict its campaign for answers to parliamentary proceedings but to engage the wider public on the issue.
“Fight for the people of Ghana in the court of public opinion as well. Fight until the Ghanaian people receive all the answers they deserve,” he said.
He said the NPP would remain vigilant throughout the process and would continue monitoring developments as the Minority pursued its demand for accountability.
“In writing and the oath, if necessary, the New Patriotic Party remains vigilant. Our Minority Caucus will not look away,” he stated.
The party also called on Ghanaians to take an active interest in the controversy surrounding the reported GH¢22 billion losses and demand clear explanations from the institutions responsible.
The NPP’s position adds political weight to the Minority’s push for parliamentary scrutiny of GoldBod and the transactions at the centre of the controversy, as pressure mounts for a detailed public account of the reported financial losses and their implications for the management of Ghana’s gold resources.
