The Minority Caucus in Parliament has called on the government to urgently complete unfinished bypasses and ongoing construction works on the Accra-Kumasi Highway following Monday’s fatal road crash at the Birimso Bridge near Bonsu Junction in the Eastern Region.
The caucus said the accident, which claimed three lives and left several others injured, was another stark reminder of the persistent safety challenges on one of Ghana’s busiest highways and underscored the need for immediate intervention.
The crash involved a State Transport Company (STC) bus, a fuel tanker, a Mitsubishi pick-up and a Kia Sorento, renewing public concern over the condition of the highway, which has witnessed several fatal accidents in recent years.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, August 4, the Minority expressed condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and wished the injured a speedy recovery.
The caucus described the tragedy as unacceptable and urged the government to take swift action to improve safety along the corridor.
“Far too many lives have been lost on this highway, and the nation cannot continue to accept these recurring tragedies as inevitable,” the statement said.
According to the Minority, the completion of the unfinished bypasses and other ongoing road works should be treated as a national priority to reduce accidents and improve traffic flow on the strategic transport route.
The caucus also urged the government to accelerate work on the existing highway while plans for the proposed Accra-Kumasi Expressway are pursued.
It warned that continued delays in completing critical road infrastructure could result in more avoidable deaths and injuries.
The Accra-Kumasi Highway serves as Ghana’s principal transport corridor, linking the capital with the Ashanti Region and the northern parts of the country.
Heavy traffic volumes, ongoing construction works and deteriorating sections of the road have contributed to a series of serious accidents over the years, prompting repeated calls for comprehensive safety improvements.
The latest crash has once again intensified calls for urgent government action to make the highway safer for motorists and commuters.
