NPP decisions are collective, not Bawumia’s – Haruna Mohammed

The Deputy General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Haruna Mohammed, has dismissed attempts to link the party’s internal decisions to its flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, insisting that all major decisions are taken collectively by the party’s constitutional organs and not by any individual.

Speaking amid controversies surrounding the NPP’s ongoing constituency elections, Mr Mohammed said decisions on disputes arising from the elections are made by the party’s National Council and National Executive Committee (NEC) in accordance with the party’s constitution and should not be attributed to Dr Bawumia.

“I’ve heard people dragging the name of the flagbearer into this, and I want to use this medium to let everybody know that decisions of the party are not decisions of individuals,” he said.

“The flagbearer is not a lawyer. He’s not a judge. And he doesn’t sit on any case,” he added.

His remarks follow disputes and legal challenges that have disrupted constituency elections in parts of the country, with some contests suspended after court injunctions.

Mr Mohammed explained that whenever legal issues arise, the party respects the rule of law by suspending electoral processes in the affected constituencies until the courts determine the matters.

He cited constituencies such as Assin South and Pungpongpu, where elections were halted following court injunctions issued against the electoral process.

“When there is an injunction that is recognised in law, the party gives an instruction for a halt until the determination of that particular matter is met,” he stated.

According to him, the suspension of elections in such constituencies reflects the party’s commitment to due process and respect for the country’s judicial system rather than the influence of any individual.

He stressed that resolutions adopted by the National Council or the National Executive Committee represent the collective position of the NPP.

“If anything is being determined by the National Council of the Party or the National Executive Committee of the Party, it is not a decision of the flagbearer. It is the decision of the party,” he emphasised.

Mr Mohammed reaffirmed the NPP’s commitment to resolving internal disputes through lawful and democratic means, assuring party members that the leadership would continue to uphold the rule of law and the party’s internal governance processes as it prepares for future elections.
