A 26-year-old commercial motor rider is fighting for his life after he was shot by unidentified gunmen in Nkwanta South in the Oti Region on Monday, May 4, 2026.
The victim, identified as Bright Nkpah, was reportedly travelling from Nkwanta towards Odomi-Challa in the company of other commuters when the attackers ambushed them and opened fire.
Mr Nkpah sustained gunshot wounds during the attack and was rushed to the St Joseph Catholic Hospital, where he is currently receiving treatment. Hospital authorities say efforts are underway to stabilise his condition.
The motive behind the shooting remains unclear, although the incident is suspected to be connected to the renewed conflict in the area.
The latest attack has heightened tension in Nkwanta South following recent violent disturbances that claimed the life of a 28-year-old food vendor and left a two-year-old child injured last Sunday.
Residents say fear and uncertainty have forced many people to flee parts of the town, while academic activities in some schools have been disrupted over safety concerns.
Meanwhile, security has been intensified in the area, with joint police and military patrols deployed to maintain law and order and prevent further violence.
Authorities say investigations into the incident are ongoing and have appealed to residents to remain calm, vigilant, and cooperate with security personnel.
