Haruna Iddrisu, Member of Parliament for Tamale South and the current Minister of Education, has distanced himself from a social media campaign portraying him as a prospective flagbearer for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the 2028 presidential election.
In a statement issued on Thursday, February 5, 2026, by his press secretary, Hashmin Mohammed, the public was urged to disregard posters circulating online, which the office described as “fake.”
“The Office of the Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has disassociated itself from posters circulating on social media purportedly promoting him as a flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC),” the statement said.
It explained that the office had become aware of promotional materials online suggesting that the minister intended to contest the NDC flagbearer position.
“The Office wishes to state unequivocally that these posters did not originate from Haruna Iddrisu or his office,” it added, urging the public to treat them with the contempt they deserved.
According to the statement, Mr Iddrisu remains fully focused on his duties as Minister of Education and Member of Parliament for Tamale South.
He is currently in Lusaka, Zambia, accompanying President John Dramani Mahama and working with him to advance the Reset Ghana agenda, particularly in the education sector, which has been entrusted to him by the President.
“The Office thanks the public for their continued support and cooperation,” the statement concluded.
This is not the first time Mr Iddrisu’s name has surfaced in discussions about a successor to President Mahama within the NDC.
However, Mr Iddrisu himself has endorsed Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang as a suitable flagbearer for the party in the next presidential election.
At separate events last year, he said Prof Opoku-Agyemang had the capacity to become Ghana’s first female President, describing her as a strong and credible candidate.
He explained that his endorsement was intended to clarify remarks he made during the Vice President’s visit to him at the Ministry of Education.
During that visit, Mr Iddrisu offered prayers for Prof Opoku-Agyemang and expressed the hope that she might one day be elevated to the presidency, adding that she was well qualified to lead the nation.
