NPP condemns arrest of Miracles Aboagye, demands due process

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has called on the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) to immediately release its Communications Team member, Dennis Miracles Aboagye, or charge him before a court of competent jurisdiction.

In a statement signed by NPP General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, the party alleged that Aboagye was arrested at the airport by EOCO officers with the assistance of Immigration officers and has since been held in custody.

According to the statement, Aboagye’s lawyers have been denied access to him and his whereabouts have not been disclosed. No charges have been preferred against him, the party added.

“The NPP therefore demands: That EOCO release Dennis Miracles Aboagye immediately, or charge him and put him before a court of competent jurisdiction as the Constitution requires,” the statement said.

The party further demanded that Aboagye be granted “unrestricted access to his lawyers and his family, without further delay,” citing Article 14(2) of the 1992 Constitution.

Labeling the arrest as “not law enforcement” but “intimidation,” the NPP said Aboagye is “one of the loudest and most effective critics of this government.” The statement noted that he has raised questions about galamsey, challenged the administration’s record, and announced his candidacy for a leadership position in the party only hours before the arrest.

“That this government end the pattern of politically motivated invitations, arrests and detentions targeted at members of the New Patriotic Party,” the General Secretary added.

Addressing EOCO and “those directing it,” Mr. Kodua Frimpong said: “institutions of state are not private weapons. Ghanaians are watching, and Ghana’s institutions will outlive this government.”

He also urged NPP members to “stay calm, stay lawful, stay united,” adding that “Intimidation has never silenced this party, and it will not begin today.”
