7 fishermen missing after canoe departs Sekondi Harbour

The Western Regional Marine Police Command is coordinating a search operation with the Ghana Navy and other maritime agencies for a fishing canoe, “Second Chance”, and its seven crew members who have been reported missing.

The crew have not been heard from since the canoe departed the Sekondi Fishing Harbour on October 9, 2026, for a fishing expedition.

A statement signed by Chief Superintendent of Police Olivia Adiku, Head of the Public Affairs Unit of the Western Regional Police Command, said the owner of the canoe, Nana Kweku Atta, reported the disappearance to the Fishing Harbour Police Station in Sekondi on October 18, 2026, after repeated attempts to contact the crew proved unsuccessful.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the canoe may have suffered engine failure and drifted towards the Tema and Volta coastal areas. However, its last known position has not yet been established.

The statement said the Western Naval Command, Ghana Maritime Authority (GMA), Fisheries Commission, relevant coastal police stations, chief fishermen, and the Eastern Naval Command in Tema had been alerted to assist in the search operation.

According to the Police, efforts were underway in collaboration with relevant agencies to determine the canoe’s last known location and trace the missing crew members.

The Police have appealed to fishing communities and members of the public along the coastline to report any sighting of the canoe or information regarding the whereabouts of the crew to the nearest police station.

The canoe reportedly left the Sekondi Fishing Harbour on a fishing expedition in waters off Axim.
