Six aspirants, including the widow of the late Member of Parliament, Hajia Amina Adam, have picked nomination forms to contest the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary primary for the Ayawaso East by-election scheduled for March 3, 2026.
The five male contenders are Ghana’s Ambassador to Nigeria, Baba Jamal Mohammed Ahmed; Yakubu Azindow, a former parliamentary aspirant; Mohammed Ramne; Mohammed Abdul Salam; and Najib Mohammed Sani.
Confirming the development, the NDC Greater Accra Regional Secretary, Theophilus Tetteh Chaie, said the party would scrutinise the aspirants’ documents after the submission of nomination forms on January 27, 2026.
He explained that the vetting process, balloting and the hearing of any appeals would take place on January 28, 2026, ahead of the party’s parliamentary primary slated for February 7, 2026.
The contest to replace the late NDC Member of Parliament for Ayawaso East, Mahama Naser Toure, has intensified following the party’s decision to open nominations on Saturday, January 24, 2026, for interested candidates.
Ayawaso East has traditionally been a stronghold of the governing NDC since the start of the Fourth Republic, with the party consistently winning both parliamentary and presidential elections in the constituency.
At the 2024 parliamentary elections, the late Mr Toure secured 22,139 votes, representing 70.85 per cent of the total valid votes cast. His sole challenger, Zak Rahman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), polled 9,110 votes, accounting for 29.15 per cent, out of 31,249 valid votes.
The NPP has indicated its intention to contest the by-election but has yet to announce whether it will organise a primary to select a new candidate or maintain its 2024 parliamentary candidate, Zak Rahman. The Liberal Party of Ghana has also expressed interest in fielding a candidate for the by-election.
