Police foil alleged plot to sell newborn for GH¢20,000

Police in the Upper East Region have arrested three suspects for allegedly trafficking a young Nigerian woman, forcing her into prostitution at the Gbane mining site in the Talensi District, and attempting to sell her newborn baby for GH¢20,000.

The suspects, identified by police as Peace Agbede, Favour Sunday Udo and Faith Levy, are currently in custody and are expected to be arraigned before court.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, July 1, 2026, the Ghana Police Service said preliminary investigations revealed that Agbede met the victim in Nigeria and allegedly lured her to Ghana with promises of helping her pursue opportunities in the country’s movie industry because of her beauty.

According to police, the victim accepted the offer and travelled to Ghana with Agbede. Instead of being introduced to the film industry, however, she was allegedly taken to the Gbane-Tongo mining community, where she was forced into prostitution and made to pay her “madam” GH¢400 daily from her earnings.

Police said the victim became pregnant during the period and gave birth on June 26, 2026.

Investigators further alleged that shortly after the birth, Agbede and Udo visited the victim and attempted to persuade her to sell the baby to a prospective buyer for GH¢20,000.

A search of Agbede’s room led to the recovery of six record books containing names including Esther, Mary, Bright and Silver, as well as 265 unused condoms, police said.

The operation also resulted in the rescue of four other female victims, aged between 18 and 20, who are believed to have been subjected to similar exploitation.

Police said investigations are ongoing, and the suspects will be put before the court to face the appropriate charges.
