Ghana Water Ltd (GWL) has announced that parts of Greater Accra and the Eastern Region will experience a three-day interruption in water supply as it undertakes planned maintenance works on the Kpong–Tema transmission pipelines from August 6 to 8, 2026
The exercise will involve the isolation and replacement of weak sections on the 21-inch and 42-inch transmission pipelines between Kpong and Tema as part of the company’s proactive infrastructure maintenance programme.
According to GWL, routine engineering assessments identified more than 300 metres of deteriorated pipeline sections that require urgent replacement to prevent major failures, reduce water losses and improve the reliability of water supply.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, August 4, GWL noted that to facilitate the works, the Kpong Water Treatment Plant will be temporarily shut down while five sections of the transmission pipelines are isolated for replacement.
As a result, customers served by the Kpong Water Supply System are expected to experience water supply interruptions and reduced water pressure throughout the three-day maintenance period.
The affected areas include the eastern part of Accra, such as Gbetsele, Ashaiman, Katamanso, Zenu, Atadeka, Afienya, Appolonia, Prampram, Kpone and Dawhenya.
Communities within the Tema Metropolis, including Spintex, Baatsona, Sakumono, Nungua, Teshie and surrounding areas, as well as Kpong, Akuse, Somanya, Atimpoku and nearby towns, will also be affected.
The company apologised for the inconvenience and urged affected customers to store enough water before the maintenance begins and use available supplies judiciously during the period.
It also advised hospitals, health facilities and other essential service providers to make contingency arrangements, adding that water tankers will be deployed to support selected critical institutions where feasible.
GWL said the intervention is a necessary investment to safeguard one of the country’s key water transmission systems, noting that the replacement of the deteriorated pipeline sections will help reduce pipeline bursts, minimise emergency shutdowns, improve operational efficiency and enhance the long-term reliability of water supply to customers.
