NPP group demands Justin Kodua’s resignation

A pressure group within the New Patriotic Party (NPP), the Grassroots Alliance for Victory 2028, has petitioned the party’s Council of Elders, urging it to advise General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong to step down over what it describes as decisions that undermine party unity and weaken grassroots participation.

In a petition dated July 11, 2026, addressed to the Chairman and Members of the Council of Elders, the group accused the General Secretary of demonstrating poor leadership through a recent directive concerning the party’s upcoming constituency executive elections.

The petition follows a circular issued by the Office of the General Secretary to regional representatives, regional officers and constituency election committees outlining arrangements for the internal polls.

According to the group, the circular instructed party officials that delegates would not receive transportation, food, drinks, snacks or even water during the elections. Instead, delegates were directed to simply “Arrive. Vote. Leave.”

The Grassroots Alliance argued that the decision fails to consider the circumstances of more than 300,000 delegates, many of whom serve as polling station executives and electoral area coordinators in rural and underserved communities.

“We respectfully submit that this directive is insensitive to the over 300,000 delegates, many of whom are Polling Station Executives and Electoral Area Coordinators from rural and deprived areas. Requiring them to bear their own transport and welfare costs in this economic climate will lead to low turnout, disenfranchisement, and potential unrest,” the petition stated.

The group maintained that the directive contradicts the NPP’s objective of ensuring peaceful, transparent and credible elections, warning that it could discourage participation and affect the credibility of the electoral process.

The petition also questioned the justification that the decision was driven by financial challenges, pointing to what it described as the General Secretary’s previous financial support for some aspirants during internal party contests.

“The same communication cites ‘severe financial constraints’ as the reason for withdrawing welfare support. Yet, it is public knowledge and a matter of concern to the rank and file that the same General Secretary, as an individual, has in the past publicly supported the payment of nomination fees for a number of aspirants across the country,” the petition said.

The group further asked: “If the Party is broke, how is the General Secretary as an individual able to fund nominations for multiple aspirants, while the Party cannot provide even water for delegates?”

According to the petitioners, the situation creates the perception of misplaced priorities and raises concerns about the party’s leadership and financial management.

The Grassroots Alliance also warned that the directive could weaken the party’s support base ahead of the 2028 general elections, arguing that disappointed delegates may become disengaged or susceptible to external influence.

“The decision risks alienating the very base of the Party ahead of 2028. Delegates who feel abandoned may become apathetic or vulnerable to manipulation. This is contrary to the unifying role expected of the General Secretary,” the petition argued.

Among its recommendations, the group asked the Council of Elders to invite Mr. Kodua Frimpong to explain the reasons behind the directive and address what it described as inconsistencies regarding the party’s financial position.

It also appealed to the National Executive Committee (NEC) to reconsider the decision and provide delegates with at least a token welfare package and drinking water to encourage high turnout and ensure peaceful constituency elections.

Additionally, the group called on the Council of Elders to advise the General Secretary to resign if he is unable to rebuild confidence in his leadership.

“In the event that the General Secretary is unable to reconcile these contradictions and restore confidence in his leadership, we humbly pray the Council to advise him to step down as General Secretary in the interest of Party unity and credibility,” the petition stated.

The petition was signed by the group’s convenor, Enoch Ayim, and copied to the NPP National Chairman, the National Executive Committee, the party’s presidential candidate and former presidents.
