Nigeria secured a place in the semi-finals of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) with a hard-fought 2-0 win over Algeria at the Grand Stadium of Marrakech, setting up a tantalising last-four clash against hosts Morocco.
The Super Eagles delivered a disciplined and clinical performance, ending Algeria’s hopes of a deep tournament run and reinforcing Nigeria’s status as serious title contenders.
After a tense and evenly contested first half, in which both sides cancelled each other out in midfield and limited clear chances, Nigeria struck decisively in the second half. Algeria enjoyed periods of possession but struggled to breach a well-organised Nigerian defence.
The breakthrough came in the 47th minute when Victor Osimhen rose highest to power a commanding header from Onyemaechi’s precise cross. The goal — Osimhen’s fourth of the tournament — swung momentum firmly in Nigeria’s favour.
Ten minutes later, Nigeria doubled their advantage. Osimhen again orchestrated the move, threading Akor Adams through Algeria’s defensive line. Adams kept his composure, rounded goalkeeper Luca Zidane, and slotted the ball into an empty net in the 57th minute, sealing a 2-0 victory.
Algeria pushed forward in search of a goal, but Nigeria remained compact and composed, frustrating the Desert Foxes while remaining dangerous on the counter. Goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali made a crucial late save to preserve the clean sheet.
The defeat ends Algeria’s AFCON campaign, leaving them to once again lament missed opportunities in the knockout stages.
Nigeria now face a high-stakes semi-final against Morocco in Rabat — a match promising intensity, quality, and an electric atmosphere as two African heavyweights vie for a place in the final. While the Super Eagles ride the momentum of their recent performances, Morocco, backed by home support and yet to concede from open play, provide a formidable challenge in what is shaping up to be one of AFCON 2025’s standout fixtures.
