NDC elders warn against early presidential campaigning

The Council of Elders of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has issued a strong caution to party members, warning them against engaging in premature presidential campaign activities. The Council called for unity, discipline, and a renewed focus on governance as the party continues to implement its mandate.

The caution follows a high-level meeting between the Council and President John Dramani Mahama on Friday, May 29, 2026. The discussions centred on strengthening internal cohesion within the party, reinforcing discipline among members, and rallying support for the government’s “Resetting Agenda,” which aims to drive national development and institutional renewal.

In a statement released after the meeting, the Council expressed concern about increasing reports of early campaign activities being undertaken by certain individuals and groups within the party. It warned that such conduct risks undermining party cohesion and could divert attention from the government’s key governance priorities.

The Council stressed that the NDC is currently focused on delivering its mandate to the people of Ghana and urged members to direct their energy, influence, and resources toward supporting the government’s development agenda rather than internal political competition.

“At this critical stage of national reconstruction and renewal, every member of the Party is expected to devote his or her energies, resources, and commitment to supporting the Government’s efforts to reset the country and improve the lives of Ghanaians, rather than engaging in activities that have the potential to create division, distraction, or unnecessary internal competition,” the Council stated.

It further referenced Article 42 of the NDC Constitution, which outlines the procedures and timelines for selecting a presidential candidate. According to the Council, such processes are the exclusive responsibility of the National Executive Committee (NEC), which determines when and how internal elections should be conducted.

The Council made it clear that until the NEC officially sets a timetable and guidelines for presidential primaries, no individual, group, or faction within the party is permitted to engage in any form of campaign activity, whether direct or indirect.

“The Council emphasises that, until the appropriate constitutional processes have been initiated and the National Executive Committee has determined the timetable and guidelines for the conduct of presidential primaries, no individual, group, or interest bloc is authorised to undertake or promote any form of presidential campaign, whether directly or indirectly,” it stated.

It therefore instructed all persons involved in early campaigning to immediately cease such activities, including mobilisation, endorsements, and other related political actions.

Reiterating its appeal for unity, the Council urged members to remain focused on governance and national development, stressing that internal competition will be addressed at the appropriate time.

“The time for internal contests will come. For now, our collective responsibility is to serve the nation and successfully implement the mandate entrusted to us,” it added.
