President John Dramani Mahama on Tuesday held high-level bilateral talks with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer at Number 10 Downing Street in London, with discussions focused on strengthening economic relations, expanding trade and investment, and advancing key development priorities between Ghana and the United Kingdom.
The meeting, held at the official residence and office of the British Prime Minister, formed part of President Mahama’s official engagements during his working visit to the United Kingdom, which is aimed at promoting Ghana as a preferred destination for British investment, capital and technical expertise.
The closed-door discussions centred on deepening the long-standing partnership between Ghana and the UK, with both leaders reaffirming their commitment to strengthening economic cooperation and creating new opportunities for businesses in both countries.
The two leaders explored ways of increasing bilateral trade, attracting greater investment flows and enhancing collaboration in sectors critical to Ghana’s economic transformation agenda.
Focus on economic growth and development
Beyond trade and investment, the discussions also covered broader development issues, including education partnerships and climate financing.
The two countries examined opportunities to strengthen cooperation in education through partnerships that could support skills development, innovation and knowledge exchange.
Climate financing also featured prominently in the discussions as Ghana seeks additional support for climate adaptation, environmental sustainability and green growth initiatives.
The meeting underscored the growing importance both countries attach to development cooperation as they pursue shared objectives in economic growth, sustainable development and job creation.
Commitment to stronger business engagement
President Mahama and Prime Minister Starmer agreed to sustain the momentum generated by the discussions through existing institutional frameworks, particularly the Ghana–UK Business Council.
Both sides also expressed support for future trade missions aimed at facilitating greater interaction between businesses, investors and policymakers from the two countries.
The commitment is expected to strengthen commercial relations and create new avenues for investment, technology transfer and private-sector collaboration.
Part of broader UK engagements
The meeting capped a busy morning of engagements for President Mahama in London as he continues discussions with political leaders, investors and development partners on Ghana’s economic prospects and investment opportunities.
The President has used the visit to promote Ghana’s economic recovery programme and to encourage stronger international partnerships to support growth, industrialisation and employment creation.
Economic team accompanies President
President Mahama was accompanied to the meeting by key members of his economic team, including Cassiel Ato Forson, Minister for Finance; Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, Minister for Trade, Agribusiness and Industry; and Sabah Zita Benson.
Their presence highlighted the economic focus of the visit and Ghana’s efforts to deepen engagement with the United Kingdom on trade, investment and development cooperation.
The bilateral meeting is expected to further strengthen relations between Accra and London as both countries seek to expand economic opportunities and reinforce their long-standing partnership.
