Former Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East, Mavis Hawa Koomson, has been elected as the National Women’s Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
She secured the position at the party’s National Delegates Conference on Saturday, October 3, at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi, with 783 votes.
Hawa Koomson contested the position against Hajia Safia Mohammed, who polled 429 votes.
Her election marks a new role for the former legislator, who has been active in the NPP’s political structures for several years.
Hawa Koomson entered Parliament in 2012 as the NPP’s representative for Awutu Senya East and subsequently retained the seat in the 2016 and 2020 general elections. She served in the Akufo-Addo administration, first as Minister for Special Development Initiatives before becoming Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture Development in 2021.
She served three consecutive terms in Parliament before losing the Awutu Senya East seat to the NDC’s Phyllis Naa Koryoo Okunor in the 2024 general election.
Her latest position therefore returns her to a prominent national role within the NPP, this time leading the party’s women’s wing.
The delegates’ conference brought together 7,163 delegates from across the country to participate in the election of the party’s national officers.
The Ashanti Region recorded the highest number of delegates with 1,122, followed by Greater Accra with 773 and the Eastern Region with 732. The Savannah Region had the lowest number with 184 delegates, while Western North had 223.
Of the total delegates, 2,745 were eligible to vote in the Youth Organiser race, 1,275 in the Women’s Organiser contest and 858 in the NASARA Organiser election.
