The Greater Accra Regional Minister, Linda Obenewaa Akweley Ocloo, has directed all Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) in the region to immediately activate emergency response measures following severe flooding caused by heavy rains that swept across parts of the Greater Accra Region on Monday.
The directive comes as floodwaters inundated several communities, disrupting movement, damaging homes and property, and leaving many residents stranded after hours of intense rainfall.
In a statement issued on Monday, June 29, 2026, the Minister expressed sympathy to individuals and families affected by the floods and assured them that government agencies had been mobilised to provide immediate assistance.
“My heart goes out to all individuals and families who have been affected by this unfortunate incident,” she said.
“I sincerely sympathise with those who have suffered losses, displacement and other hardships, and I want to assure every affected resident that you are not alone. We stand with you during this difficult period.”
Mrs Ocloo stressed that the safety and well-being of residents remained the Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council’s highest priority and directed all Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) to work closely with emergency agencies to respond swiftly to the situation.
She instructed all MMDCEs to immediately activate their emergency response teams in collaboration with the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), the Ghana National Fire Service, the Ghana Police Service and other relevant agencies to support affected communities.
According to the Minister, the emergency teams have been tasked with intensifying rescue operations where necessary, evacuating residents trapped by floodwaters, assessing the extent of damage and providing immediate relief to affected households.
She emphasised that all MMDCEs must remain fully engaged until the flooding situation is brought under control.
“This is a time for decisive leadership and swift action,” she stated.
Mrs Ocloo said the Regional Coordinating Council was closely monitoring developments and coordinating responses with emergency institutions to minimise the impact of the floods and ensure timely support for affected communities.
With the Ghana Meteorological Agency forecasting the possibility of additional rainfall, she urged residents to remain vigilant and strictly adhere to safety precautions.
She advised the public to avoid unnecessary travel, stay away from flood-prone areas, drains and fast-flowing water, and comply with all instructions issued by emergency personnel.
The Minister also appealed to parents and guardians to ensure children do not play in floodwaters or attempt to cross flooded roads and drains, warning that such actions could put lives at risk.
Residents requiring emergency assistance have been encouraged to contact NADMO through its emergency lines, 0302 772395 or 0299 344030, or via WhatsApp on 055 160 9393.
Reaffirming government’s commitment to supporting affected communities, Mrs Ocloo said the Regional Coordinating Council, working together with the MMDAs and emergency response agencies, would continue to provide assistance until the situation stabilises.
“To everyone affected by this disaster, I assure you that I stand with you,” she said.
“Together with our Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies and our emergency response agencies, we will continue to work tirelessly to protect lives, assist those in need and support our communities through this challenging period.”
The heavy rainfall on Monday caused flooding in several parts of the capital, with emergency agencies continuing to assess the extent of the damage and respond to distress calls from affected residents.
