Ghana to host 74th WAEC Annual Council Meeting

Ghana is set to host the 74th Annual Council Meeting of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) on Tuesday, March 24, and Wednesday, March 25, 2026.

The Council Meeting will be attended by key stakeholders from the five WAEC member countries.

These stakeholders will deliberate on policy, review future issues, and shape the direction of the Council going forward, particularly in the area of educational assessment.

Delivering the welcome address at a press soirée to announce the upcoming event, the Head of National Office of WAEC Ghana, Dr Rosemond Wilson, said, “Issues of education, standards, assessment and credibility remain central to national development.”

She explained that “the meeting is part of a broader commitment to strengthening assessment systems and ensuring that our institutions continue to respond to the evolving needs of our countries and our learners.”

“For us, this is not only an important institutional responsibility, it is also a moment of significance for Ghana’s education and assessment landscape and for the wider West African sub-region,” she said.

The Registrar to Council, Alhaji Pateh Bah, in a statement delivered on his behalf by the Head of Public Affairs at WAEC, Demianus Ojijeogu, further explained that the meeting is “a platform to showcase the best of our tradition. It is during the week that excellence in the youth of the West African sub-region is celebrated, our elders are venerated, and their outstanding contributions to the work of the Council are publicly acknowledged.”

He also indicated that it is at this meeting that the decisions of the committees charged with overseeing various aspects of the Council’s operations are considered for ratification (or approval in certain cases).

It is also at this meeting that the Secretariat renders, in full, an account of its activities over the preceding twelve months, while plans for the ensuing year are examined and approved.

Plans for the upcoming meeting include the Chairman of Council leading a delegation to pay a courtesy call on the President, John Dramani Mahama, the Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, and the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Linda Ocloo.

On Tuesday afternoon, the President will formally open the 74th Annual Council Meeting. At this event, three Ghanaian students will be honoured with the Excellence Awards for their outstanding performance in the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) conducted in 2025.

Prof. William Afiakwa Asomaning, a distinguished Ghanaian academic, will also be honoured with the Distinguished Friends of Council Award for his contribution to the success of WAEC in Ghana and in the sub-region in general.

On Wednesday, March 25, the Annual WAEC Endowment Fund Lectures will be delivered by the Technical Advisor to the Minister of Education, Prof. George K. T. Oduro, on the topic, “Fostering Assessment Integrity within a Cultural Context of Credentialism,” at 2:00 p.m. at the Alisa Hotel.
