Ghana-Columba clash begins the “real World Cup” – Queiroz

Ghana’s Black Stars are through to the knockout stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, but head coach Carlos Queiroz insists the real battle now begins as his side prepare for a Round of 32 clash against Colombia.

The Black Stars booked their place in the next round after finishing third in Group L with four points from one win, one draw and one defeat.

That was enough to see them advance as one of the best third-placed teams in the expanded tournament format, keeping their World Cup hopes alive despite a 2-1 setback against Croatia in their final group match in Philadelphia.

Queiroz’s men now shift attention to a heavyweight showdown with Group K winners Colombia on Saturday, July 4, at the Kansas City Stadium.

The South Americans arrive in strong form, unbeaten in the group stage with seven points from two wins and a draw, and a defensive record that has seen them concede just once.

Their final group fixture ended in a draw against Portugal, a result that confirmed top spot in Group K.

The fixture sets up a first-ever World Cup meeting between Ghana and Colombia, with a place in the Round of 16 at stake. While Ghana go into the game as underdogs on paper, Queiroz has been quick to reframe the narrative, insisting the group stage was only preparation for what lies ahead.

“The World Championship, the real World Championship starts in the next game,” the Ghana coach said, suggesting that the intensity of the tournament now shifts dramatically. “Group stage, it is warming up for the qualification.”

For Ghana, that transition to knockout football comes after a bruising encounter with Croatia that exposed both resilience and defensive lapses.

The Black Stars fell 2-1 in Philadelphia, despite moments of promise and a spirited second-half response.

The match began cautiously, with both sides sharing possession but struggling to create clear chances. Ghana were nearly punished in the 18th minute when Kamaldeen Sulemana was dispossessed, allowing Nikola Vlašić to strike the base of the post.

Croatia eventually broke the deadlock in the 31st minute through Petar Sučić, whose long-range effort beat goalkeeper Benjamin Asare after Ghana’s midfield struggled to settle.

Elisha Owusu and Thomas Partey found it difficult to impose control, with unforced errors disrupting Ghana’s rhythm.

Antoine Semenyo came close to levelling before half-time, but his effort narrowly missed the target, leaving Ghana trailing at the break.

After the restart, Queiroz introduced Abdul Fatawu Issahaku, whose energy immediately lifted Ghana’s attack.

The winger tested the Croatian defence with a powerful 25-yard strike that went just wide.

Ghana’s pressure eventually paid off in the 73rd minute when Derrick Luckassen bundled home from close range after an Ernest Nuamah free-kick.

The goal survived a lengthy VAR check, briefly raising hopes of a comeback.

However, Croatia responded almost immediately.

Mario Pašalić forced a sharp save from Asare, and from the resulting corner Sučić rose highest to head in his second goal of the match, restoring Croatia’s lead.

Despite late pressure from Ghana, poor decision-making in the final third cost them a second equaliser, sealing their defeat but not their elimination.

The result still proved enough for qualification, with Ghana advancing as one of the best third-placed teams from Group L. Now attention turns fully to Colombia, a side Queiroz believes will test every aspect of his squad.

He has repeatedly framed qualification as only the beginning. “Qualification is not a destination,” he said.

“It is just a credit card that you receive to deserve to be in this stage of the competition. Now we have to pay the price.”

With Colombia unbeaten and defensively solid, and Ghana still searching for consistency, the Kansas City showdown promises to be a defining moment for the Black Stars’ World Cup journey.

In Queiroz’s words, the group stage may have been survival—but the knockout rounds are where the “real World Cup” truly begins.
