ECG upgrades power supply in Adentan area

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has commenced a major infrastructure upgrade project aimed at improving power supply quality and reliability in Adenta and its adjoining communities.

The project involves upgrading the capacity of the Adenta Primary Substation from 40MVA to 80MVA to address persistent erratic power supply caused by increasing load demand in the area. As part of the upgrade, ECG is installing two brand-new 30/39MVA power transformers to relieve the existing 20/26MVA transformers currently in operation at the substation.

The installation forms part of ECG’s broader mission to provide quality, reliable, and stable electricity supply to its customers.

During a media inspection tour of the project site in Adenta, the Acting General Manager of Accra Subtransmission, Ing. Emmanuel Addo, explained that upon completion, the project is expected to significantly enhance power supply stability within Adenta and surrounding communities. He noted that the upgrade will also strengthen the power network infrastructure to meet the growing electricity demand in the enclave.

“The Adenta enclave is currently supported by three 20/26 transformers, and the project intends to replace two of these 20/26 MVA transformers with new 30/39 MVA transformers. This upgrade aims to enhance the capacity of the transformers to accommodate the increasing demand”.

According to him, the project commenced on Sunday, February 22, 2026, and is being executed in two phases. He disclosed that approximately 45 percent of the work has been completed so far.

“The first phase will be completed on Friday, February 27, 2026. The timeline for the second phase will be determined after the successful commissioning of the first phase, which is currently under installation,” he stated.

Providing further details, the Regional General Manager for Accra East, Ing. Bismark Otoo, explained that customers in and around Adenta have been experiencing frequent outages due to a significant increase in load demand, which has outstripped the capacity of the existing transformers.

He emphasized that the upgrade has become necessary not only to resolve the current supply challenges but also to meet the future power needs of customers in Adenta and neighboring communities.

When completed, the project is expected to deliver stable and improved power supply to customers in Adenta, Amrahia, Oyarifa, Danfa, parts of Madina, Teiman, and other adjoining communities.

Ing. Otoo further revealed that similar projects are underway within the Accra East Region as part of ECG’s commitment to enhancing supply reliability and improving customer satisfaction.

He also cautioned the public against engaging private electricians during power outages, noting that such practices often lead to transformer overloading and damage through illegal connections, the use of substandard fuses, and unauthorized phase transfers.

Customers experiencing outages have been advised to contact ECG’s Contact Centre on 0302 611 611, visit the nearest district office, lodge complaints via the ECG PowerApp, or reach the company through its social media handles @ECGghOfficial on Facebook, X, and Instagram for prompt assistance.

ECG reiterated its commitment to delivering improved service and called for the cooperation of customers as it works to strengthen the power supply network across the region.
