Parliament is set to reconvene today, Tuesday, September 29, for an emergency sitting following a petition by the Minority Caucus over a series of recent cocaine seizures involving consignments linked to Ghana.
The extraordinary sitting follows the seizure of nearly 3.9 tonnes of cocaine at France’s Port of Dunkirk from a container that reportedly departed Ghana.
The seizure has heightened scrutiny of Ghana’s ports, cargo inspection systems and measures to prevent the country from being used as a transit point for illicit drugs.
The Minority Caucus, led by First Deputy Minority Whip and Tolon MP Habib Iddrisu, invoked Article 112(3) of the 1992 Constitution to request the extraordinary sitting.
The one-day sitting is expected to allow lawmakers to seek answers from relevant state institutions on the circumstances surrounding the seizures and Ghana’s role in the movement of the consignments.
Lawmakers are expected to examine how the container was processed and cleared for export, the agencies responsible for inspecting and monitoring such consignments, and whether there were lapses in Ghana’s customs and security systems.
The sitting also comes amid calls for greater accountability and stronger collaboration among state institutions in the fight against drug trafficking.
The Minority has also sought clarification on other major narcotics seizures involving consignments linked to Ghana, as Parliament considers the broader implications for the country’s reputation and security.
