The Ghana Football Association (GFA) and Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz have mutually agreed to terminate his service agreement following discussions between the two parties.
The GFA announced the decision in a statement issued on Thursday, October 1, 2026.
The circumstances surrounding the termination have not been fully disclosed, and it is unclear whether the decision is directly linked to the Black Stars’ recent results in the ongoing 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.
Ghana suffered a 2-0 defeat to Côte d’Ivoire before losing 4-2 to The Gambia in their most recent qualifying matches.
In his statement, Carlos Queiroz said both parties agreed that ending their professional relationship was the most appropriate course of action under the circumstances.
“This was not an easy decision, but both parties agreed that, under the present circumstances, ending our professional relationship was the most appropriate course of action, with the interests of Ghana, the Black Stars and Ghanaian football above everything else,” he said.
Queiroz thanked the GFA, particularly its President, for the trust and opportunity to lead the national team.
He said he arrived in Ghana determined to help build a stronger future for the Black Stars and contribute to the development of the country’s football talent.
“Despite our commitment and efforts, the necessary conditions were not fully established, and our recent performance added to the decision to bring this journey to an end,” he said.
The Portuguese coach also expressed appreciation to his technical staff and others who supported the team, particularly during preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
He also paid tribute to the Black Stars players and urged Ghanaians to continue supporting them.
“Believe in these players. Protect them. Support them,” he said.
“The talent and potential are there. With unity, support and the right environment, this generation can achieve great things for Ghana.”
Queiroz also thanked Ghanaians and Black Stars supporters for their passion and support, saying he would leave with “respect, gratitude and pride.”
