Accra East, Tema face water crisis over power instability

The Ghana Water Limited (GWL) has announced intermittent water supply challenges affecting parts of Tema and the eastern corridor of Accra, attributing the disruptions to instability in power supply and environmental conditions at its key treatment facility.

In a statement, management explained that the Kpong Water Treatment Plant, which serves a significant portion of Tema, Accra East, and surrounding communities, has been experiencing unstable electricity supply.

This, it noted, has directly affected water production and distribution.

GWL stressed that its operations are heavily dependent on stable electricity to power treatment processes, pumping systems, transmission lines, and booster stations.

As a result, fluctuations in power supply have led to reduced output and intermittent water delivery to customers.

“Any interruption or fluctuation in power supply directly affects our ability to produce and distribute water efficiently,” the statement said.

Compounding the situation is the recurring challenge of aquatic weeds at the intake point of the Kpong facility.

According to management, while the phenomenon is not new, recent heavy rains in the Akosombo catchment area have worsened the situation, resulting in unusually large volumes of weeds that clog intake screens and restrict raw water abstraction for treatment.

GWL said the combined effect of the power instability and the increased weed infestation has significantly constrained operations, leading to reduced and irregular water supply in several communities, particularly in eastern Accra and parts of the Tema Region.

The utility provider assured the public that technical teams are working continuously to clear the weeds and maintain operations to minimise the impact on supply.

It added that it is also engaging key stakeholders, including the Volta River Authority (VRA), GRIDCo, and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), to help stabilise power supply to the plant.

Management further assured customers that efforts are underway to restore normal water production and distribution as quickly as possible.

“We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience caused and appreciate the patience, understanding, and cooperation of our cherished customers,” the statement added.

GWL indicated that further updates will be communicated as the situation evolves.
