An officer of the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) has been killed and another critically injured after an explosion involving a motor tricycle transporting suspected dynamite at Hamile in the Upper West Region.
The incident occurred on Tuesday, November 3, along an unauthorised route after the civilians transporting the suspected explosives allegedly failed to stop at a security checkpoint, triggering a pursuit by security personnel.
Preliminary information gathered from security sources indicates that the tricycle occupants ignored instructions to stop, prompting officers to pursue them.
The ensuing explosion killed the civilians on board and caught the pursuing Immigration personnel, killing one officer and leaving another in critical condition.
The injured officer is receiving medical attention, although details of the injuries and the medical facility have not yet been established.
The incident has raised fresh concerns about the movement of suspected explosive materials through unauthorised routes in border communities, where security agencies face challenges monitoring cross-border movements and preventing the transportation of hazardous materials.
Hamile, located along Ghana’s border with Burkina Faso, is a strategic border community where security agencies maintain surveillance to prevent illegal movements and other cross-border security threats.
The source and intended destination of the suspected dynamite, as well as the full circumstances surrounding the explosion, were not immediately established.
