Six-year-old dies after school bus crash at Airport Junction

A tragic road accident claimed the life of a six-year-old girl on Thursday after a school bus collided with a tipper truck at Airport Junction along the Accra Mall–Dzorwulu corridor in Accra.

The young pupil died at approximately 8:00 p.m. while undergoing treatment at the Police Hospital, where she had been rushed following the incident. Medical staff reported that she had suffered severe injuries in the collision.

The crash took place around 2:00 p.m. when a tipper truck bearing the registration number GN 9673-25 struck a school bus operated by Ask God Preparatory School, based in Ashaiman. The impact left several children injured, one of whom later succumbed to her wounds later that evening.

Assistant Divisional Officer I (ADO I) King Alex Nartey of the Ghana National Fire Service confirmed that the other pupils hurt in the accident are currently receiving care at different medical facilities across the city.

Emergency teams from the Ghana National Fire Service and the National Ambulance Service arrived promptly at the scene. Their personnel worked to free the trapped and injured children before transferring them to hospital for urgent attention.

The sudden loss of the six-year-old has cast a sombre mood over the school community and the wider public. Parents and relatives of the affected children remain anxious as they monitor the condition of those still under medical care.

The precise sequence of events that caused the tipper truck to collide with the school bus is still under examination.

Investigators from the relevant traffic and police units have begun gathering statements, examining the vehicles involved and reviewing the circumstances surrounding the crash.

Officials have indicated that a full inquiry will continue in the coming days to establish the factors that led to the fatal incident and to determine whether any traffic regulations were breached.

The tragedy underscores the ongoing risks faced by schoolchildren on busy Accra roads, particularly during peak daytime hours.

Emergency responders have been praised for their swift intervention, which helped limit further loss of life. As the investigation proceeds, authorities are expected to release additional details once preliminary findings become available.
