The Volta Chapter of the Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG) has commended President John Dramani Mahama for his recent visit to the Ho Sports Stadium, describing it as a strong demonstration of the Government’s commitment to revitalising sports infrastructure in the region.
In a statement copied to the Ghana News Agency (GNA), the Association described the President’s visit to the stadium on July 17, 2026, as historic and a significant step towards addressing the long-standing challenges facing the facility.
The statement, signed by Mr Tilda Acorlor, Secretary of SWAG Volta, expressed appreciation for President Mahama’s assurance that a clear timeline would be provided for the reconstruction of the ageing stadium.
“We are elated by the President’s commitment to provide a clear timeline for the reconstruction of the Ho Sports Stadium into a befitting, modern, multi-use sports complex,” the statement said.
SWAG Volta noted that the proposed redevelopment aligned with the Government’s 24-Hour Economy initiative, with plans to incorporate commercial and recreational facilities, including shops, restaurants, entertainment centres and other amenities to ensure year-round activity at the stadium.
According to the Association, the Ho Sports Stadium has served the Volta Region for 69 years and remains a vital centre for sports development despite its deteriorating condition.
The facility has over the years supported the development of athletes, schools and local communities and continues to play a central role in promoting sports in the region.
“The President’s intervention signals the end of years of waiting; we cannot wait for work to begin,” the Association stated.
SWAG Volta appealed to the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, the National Sports Authority, the Volta Regional Coordinating Council, Metropolitan and Municipal Assemblies, corporate organisations and development partners to support the project to facilitate its early commencement.
The Association expressed confidence that the redevelopment would not only improve sports infrastructure in the region but also create employment opportunities for young people and restore the Volta region’s capacity to host national and international sporting events.
It also pledged to partner with the Government in mobilising public support for the successful implementation of the project.
