A leading communications strategist of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dennis Miracles Aboagye, has officially declared his intention to contest for the position of National Communications Director, promising to rebuild the party’s communications machinery, strengthen its grassroots messaging and restore public confidence as the party prepares for a political comeback.
The former Presidential Staffer and one-time spokesperson for former Vice-President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia said his decision was informed by more than two decades of active service to the NPP and a conviction that the party requires a more coordinated, proactive and modern communications strategy following its defeat in the 2024 general elections.
Launching his campaign, Mr Aboagye acknowledged the party’s electoral setback but said the experience had provided valuable lessons for rebuilding the NPP.
“We’re lost and I was there. I felt every moment of it,” he said, adding that he had carefully studied the causes of the party’s defeat and was prepared to help reposition the party.
“I’ve studied every failure. I’ve mapped every gap. I’ve built the corrections,” he declared.
Long political journey
Mr Aboagye traced his political journey to the grassroots of the NPP, saying his rise through the party had been built on hard work, commitment and loyalty rather than privilege.
“I was born in Latte. I did not inherit anything. I built everything I have from the ground up for this party,” he said.
He recalled beginning as a polling station activist at the Latte Methodist Primary School Polling Station before steadily rising through the party’s organisational structure.
“From a young man at Latte Methodist Primary School polling station who believed, to a campaign communications director who went to war for this party on the biggest stage. For 23 years, I have organised for this party from the bottom,” he stated.
Over the years, Mr Aboagye has occupied several strategic political and government positions.
He served as Constituency Youth Organiser for the Akropong Constituency before becoming the party’s Campaign Manager for the constituency during the 2008, 2012 and 2016 general elections.
He also served as Special Aide to the then Member of Parliament for Akropong, William Ofori Boafo, between 2007 and 2013.
His political career later saw him appointed Municipal Chief Executive for Akuapem North before President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo appointed him as Presidential Staffer with special responsibility for Local Government, Decentralisation and Rural Development.
He simultaneously served as Executive Secretary to the Inter-Ministerial Coordinating Committee on Decentralisation, an 11-member ministerial committee chaired by President Akufo-Addo to coordinate national decentralisation policies.
Within the NPP, Mr Aboagye has remained an influential communicator, serving on several regional and national strategy committees while also becoming a patron of the party at both constituency and regional levels.
His profile received a further boost when he was appointed spokesperson for then Vice-President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia during the NPP’s 2023 presidential primaries, becoming one of the leading public faces of the Bawumia campaign.
Throughout successive NPP administrations, he has been one of the party’s most recognisable media communicators, regularly defending government policies and articulating the party’s political positions.
Rebuilding communications
Mr Aboagye said his extensive experience in government communications, campaign strategy and party organisation uniquely positions him to lead the NPP’s communications directorate at a critical period.
“I have communicated for this party at the highest level. I have built the infrastructure others only speak about. I have led in the movements that mattered,” he said.
According to him, the next National Communications Director must go beyond reacting to political developments and instead establish a nationwide communications system capable of shaping public discourse.
“The NDC is governing today. They are speaking every morning. They are setting the agenda every day,” he observed.
He argued that the NPP requires a communications leader capable of coordinating messaging across all levels of the party while strengthening constituency communicators.
“The NPP needs a communications director who does not just respond, who builds the infrastructure that fights for three years straight, who equips and leads every communicator in every constituency, who makes the Ghanaian people remember why they trusted us and why they should again,” he said.
Mr Aboagye pledged to modernise the party’s communications architecture through stronger digital engagement, better message coordination and regular training for constituency communicators.
He said empowering grassroots communicators with the necessary skills and resources would be central to his strategy if elected.
Protecting NPP’s legacy
The aspiring National Communications Director also defended the record of the previous NPP administration, arguing that the party’s achievements in healthcare, education and digital transformation should not be overshadowed by its current position in opposition.
“This party gave Ghana its most important health policy. It gave Ghana an ambitious education programme. It gave Ghana a forward-looking digital vision. We did not build all of that to let it be forgotten,” he said.
He urged party members not to allow the sacrifices made by generations of NPP activists to be erased from public memory.
“We did not sacrifice everything we sacrificed to remain silent while others rewrite our story,” he stressed.
Campaign of service
Mr Aboagye insisted that his decision to contest was motivated by service rather than personal ambition.
“When I say I’m ready, I’m not speaking from ambition. I’m speaking from evidence,” he said.
“I’m not running for a title. I’m running for this party’s future.”
He explained that rebuilding public trust would remain the ultimate objective of his campaign.
“For the woman in Kumasi who is waiting for better governance. For the young man who almost stopped believing. For every communicator who gave everything and deserves an organisation worthy of their sacrifice.”
Expressing optimism about the party’s prospects, he said the NPP could return to power if it remained united and adopted an effective communications strategy.
“I’m running because I know we’re coming back,” he declared.
Formally announcing his candidature, Mr Aboagye appealed to delegates to entrust him with the influential communications portfolio.
“Today, I formally declare my intention to contest for the position of National Communications Director of our dear NPP.”
“I’m not asking for a position. I’m asking for a chance to stand with you, work with you, and fight for our dear party the way it has always deserved to be fought for.”
His entry into the race is expected to intensify competition for one of the NPP’s most strategic national executive positions as the party reorganises its structures and prepares for the 2028 general elections.
The National Communications Director plays a central role in shaping the party’s public image, coordinating media engagement and driving political messaging nationwide.
