Adwoa Safo shooting: Police seize guns, arrest six suspects

The Ghana Police Service has arrested six private security guards in connection with the shooting incident involving former Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection and former Member of Parliament for Dome-Kwabenya, Sarah Adwoa Safo, at Kwabenya in Accra on June 21, 2026.

The arrests were made following investigations launched after reports of gunfire at a private residence in the area, where the former legislator sustained injuries under circumstances that remain under investigation.

In a statement issued by the Accra Regional Public Affairs Unit and signed by the Head of Public Affairs, Superintendent Juliana Obeng, the Police said a search conducted at the scene led to the recovery of a cache of weapons and communication equipment believed to be connected to the incident.

According to the statement, investigators retrieved five pump-action guns, one Taurus pistol loaded with seven rounds of 9mm ammunition, an additional magazine containing five rounds of 9mm ammunition, as well as communication devices.

The Police explained that personnel from the National Operations Directorate and the Intelligence Directorate, who were on special duty, responded to a distress call from a residence in Kwabenya and proceeded to the location.

Upon arrival, officers established that a ceremony was underway at the residence of Mr. Tamakloe Safo Jehoshaphat, popularly known as Akofena.

Preliminary investigations revealed that Adwoa Safo later arrived at the residence and reportedly sought entry into the premises.

However, she was allegedly denied access by persons assigned to provide security at the venue.

According to the Police, armed security personnel stationed at the residence allegedly discharged firearms during the ensuing confrontation, resulting in injuries to the former lawmaker.

Investigators also found that the vehicle in which Adwoa Safo arrived had sustained multiple gunshot marks, further confirming that shots were fired during the incident.

“The suspects and exhibits have been transferred to the Police Headquarters to assist ongoing investigations,” the statement noted.

The Police added that efforts are underway to identify and apprehend all other persons who may have been involved in the incident.

The latest development follows an earlier report by the Police that Adwoa Safo had sustained gunshot wounds while visiting her late father’s residence in Kwabenya.

She reportedly suffered injuries to her left ear, head and arms and was subsequently issued with a medical report form while receiving treatment.

The incident has generated significant public attention, particularly given the prominence of the former MP and the conflicting accounts that have emerged regarding the circumstances leading to the shooting.

Police have assured the public that investigations are ongoing and that all persons found culpable will be dealt with in accordance with the law.

Authorities say forensic examinations are being conducted on the weapons and other exhibits recovered from the scene as part of efforts to establish the full facts surrounding the incident.
