Fire has engulfed several shops opposite the Accra Central Police Station, destroying property worth thousands of cedis.
The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) said personnel from the Accra City Fire Station were the first to respond to the incident, with additional support from the Ministries, Parliament and Industrial Area Fire Stations. Three extra fire tenders have been deployed to help bring the blaze under control.
One firefighter sustained injuries while battling the fire. Emergency crews are working to contain the flames and prevent them from spreading to nearby buildings, including the Accra Central Police Station.
The cause of the fire has not yet been established, and authorities have not reported any fatalities. The full extent of damage to the affected shops remains unknown as firefighting operations continue.
The GNFS has appealed to the public to stay away from the area to allow emergency personnel to work safely and effectively. Investigations into the cause of the fire are expected to begin once the situation is fully under control.
The Service has assured the public that all necessary resources have been deployed to contain the blaze and minimise further damage.
