The Management of Ghana Water Limited has informed the general public that the water level in the Weija Dam has risen above its maximum operating level of 48 feet.
As a result, all spill gates of the dam have been opened to allow for the controlled release of excess water. This measure is necessary to safeguard the structural integrity of the dam and ensure the safety of surrounding communities and infrastructure.
The public may recall that during the rainy season, and particularly when water levels exceed 45 feet, Ghana Water Limited undertakes controlled spillage operations. This standard safety procedure is aimed at preventing excessive pressure on the dam and reducing the risk of potential damage or disaster.
Management also notes that the Ghana Meteorological Agency has forecast further heavy rains upstream of the dam. This is expected to increase inflows into the reservoir, thereby necessitating continued spillage to maintain safe operating levels.
Accordingly, the controlled release of water will continue until the water level drops to a safe and manageable threshold. Depending on rainfall intensity and inflow volumes, this exercise may extend over several months.
In light of this situation, all residents living along the downstream course of the river are strongly advised to evacuate vulnerable and low-lying areas without delay. This is to protect lives and property and prevent possible flooding incidents.
Ghana Water Limited further indicates that the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), together with various District Assemblies, is making arrangements to remove structures and clear obstructions that hinder the free flow of water into the sea. The company encourages these efforts to be implemented promptly to reduce flood risks.
Ghana Water Limited remains committed to ensuring the safety of the dam and the general public and urges all citizens to adhere strictly to official safety directives and emergency advisories issued by relevant authorities.
