Asante-Akim North MP challenges detention — Lawyer

Lawyers for Ohene Kwame Frimpong say the Asante-Akim North MP is challenging his detention at Schiphol Airport, insisting the ongoing legal process involves no formal charges against him.

According to Elvis Adu Ameyaw, one of the MP’s lawyers, the detention followed a warrant reportedly issued by a magistrate court in the State of Illinois in the United States seeking Mr. Frimpong’s extradition for interrogation.

Speaking in an interview with Salt FM, Mr. Ameyaw said a legal team was currently in Amsterdam handling the matter.

He stressed that the MP remained innocent until proven guilty by a court of competent jurisdiction.

Mr. Ameyaw maintained that the warrant, issued at the request of U.S. authorities, did not contain any formal charges against the MP, contrary to speculation circulating publicly.

He explained that any decision by Dutch authorities to execute the extradition request by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) would depend on established international extradition procedures.

According to the lawyer, his client was “patiently going through the legal processes” while challenging the detention.

He also dismissed rumours regarding the alleged offence under investigation, insisting that the arrest warrant did not specify any offence against the MP.

Mr. Ameyaw appealed to constituents and the general public to remain calm while the legal team pursued all available legal avenues to protect the legislator’s rights and freedom.

He added that, as a sitting Member of Parliament, Mr. Frimpong was entitled to certain diplomatic and procedural considerations involving the governments of Ghana and Netherlands.

The lawyer further disclosed that Ralph Poku Adusei, Head of Chambers at Amansie Chambers, had been instructed to officially speak on the matter in Ghana.

Meanwhile, a statement from the Parliament of Ghana confirmed that the MP had been detained at Schiphol Airport in connection with an investigation reportedly being conducted by the FBI over alleged financial crimes.

The statement added that Ghana’s parliamentary leadership was engaging the Ghana Mission in The Hague over the development.
